Combat Your Creative Block

If you’re a creative individual, you’re no stranger to the dreadful creative block. Whether it’s writer’s block, designer’s block or any mental block keeping you from being creative, we have some helpful tips to combat it.

Whether you’re a designer, writer, artist, marketer or anything in between that requires some type of creative ability, chances are you’ve encountered the dreadful creative block. Don’t be discouraged. You can overcome it.

While our creative selves love what we do, too much of any one task can become dull and tedious. If you’ve reached this point, where you’re lacking motivation or inspiration, we have the tips you need to combat your creative block and get the ball rolling again.

  1. Step away from whatever you’re working on and do another creative activity.

Whether it’s painting a portrait, writing a poem or editing some images in Photoshop, do anything that’s creative. Immersing yourself in additional creative outlets will help give you the much needed break you deserve and will hopefully ignite some inspiration.

  1. Start getting more sleep and exercise more.

Sleep and exercise are some of the best creative aphrodisiacs. A well-rested body leads to a well-rested mind. A well-rested mind is more open and imaginative. Aerobic exercise – including dance, yoga, cardio, etc. – are also proven to have a positive impact on one’s creativity, so get moving!

  1. Eliminate any and all distractions.

If you’re experiencing creative block, chances are you might just be too distracted. Turn off your smartphone, unplug from the internet, turn off the television, clean your work space and put aside time to work on your project. Freeing yourself from distractions can do wonders for your creativity.

  1. Spend some time freewriting.

While this piece of advice is geared more toward writers, all creative individuals can experience the benefits of putting aside some time to free write. Just put down whatever comes to mind. Writing freely will allow you to clear your mind, creating space for your creativity to flourish.

  1. Collaborate with other creative individuals.

Two, three or four minds are always better than one. Whether you’re just talking an idea through with friends or looking to your favorite creative individuals for inspiration, collaboration always helps.

There are millions of ways to combat creative block and this list is by no means exhaustive.
